Hamberg Cemetery by Alan Buff:
Hamberg Cemetery, situated in the Roodepoort area of Johannesburg, was established in 1888, making it one of the city's earliest burial grounds. Its inception coincided with Johannesburg's rapid expansion following the 1886 gold rush, which necessitated the development of new cemeteries to accommodate the growing population. The municipality of Roodepoort, which later became part of the greater Johannesburg metropolitan area, provided cemeteries for its residents, with Hamberg Cemetery being among the first, followed by Maraisburg in 1893 and Old Roodepoort in 1895.
Over time, Hamberg Cemetery became part of the network of cemeteries managed by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the entity responsible for the maintenance of the city's burial grounds. Currently, Hamberg Cemetery is closed to new burials but remains accessible to visitors during designated hours. The cemetery undergoes maintenance every 60 days to ensure its upkeep.
